The “Tamale” Effect

My Love Affair With Restylane® Silk & Restylane® Lyft

Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Restylane® Lyft and Restylane® Silk. However, the thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have a confession I feel ready to take ownership of: I’m addicted to looking like a “hot tamale.” Now how each of us define this will vary tremendously, and of course I chose this expression to make you smile, but to some degree aren’t we all chasing this goal? Dying our hair regularly so our gray roots are concealed. Trying the latest at home teeth whitening innovation to brighten our smile. Applying the newest serum promising to send our faces back to our youthful 20s. I’ve just begun watching that new show “Scream Queens” about the sorority girls under attack by a crazy person. But what jumped out to me in episode 1 is how full and lush the ladies faces are! Oh to be that young again. Wonder if these actresses appreciate all that collagen and elastin their faces are rockin’??? Uh probably not top on their gratitude list, but as we know hindsight is 20/20!

So yes, I was excited to receive an invite to meet with Dr. Jason Emer recently and have an opportunity to “borrow” his eyes and expertise about my appearance. We considered how my face is aging and what subtle things I have the ability to do [with his help], albeit temporarily, to improve my facial structure so I can be a “Scream Queen” again too, LOL!

Dr. Emer consulted with me for quite a long time (Thank you Sir!). He studied my bone structure carefully. Took photos of me with something called a Visia Machine and also with a very hi tech camera that lives at his office. Only then did he make his recommendations about how to proceed: He suggested Restylane® Silk in my lips paired with some Restylane® Lyft in my upper cheek region to balance everything out and restore some subtle fullness into my facial features. I asked Dr. Emer to translate the two fillers into terms I could understand. He said Restylane Silk is the first FDA approved product for lips and the lines around them in patients over 21 years old. It’s intended to create a natural looking outcome around our lips and mouth when the fine lines and loss of volume finally reach a boiling point that rallies us to take action. Restylane Lyft is the first and only FDA-approved filler indicated to provide lift to cheeks and add volume to correct and smooth smile lines. This all sounded like it played nicely into my “Tamale Effect” P.O.A. (this stands for Plan Of Action). “This all sounds intriguing and a good fit for me Doctor. How do we get started?” I heard myself inquiring? So readers and beauty purveyors here’s, in a somewhat organized fashion what I think you need to know before scheduling an appointment with Dr. Emer or another doc certified to administer these two fillers:

  • THE AYE YAI YAI FACTOR: The discomfort IS bearable… because a numbing cream was initially applied over the areas the doctor planned to treat and after 10 or 15 minutes that pop song by The Weekend “I can’t feel my face” was the tune I was humming.
  • COMMUNICATION IS KEY: Emer really understands the art of balance and also subtleness, which is a huge part of the equation. You want your face to look refreshed and lines to be minimized. But of course none of us want suddenly look too extreme nor overdone. Talk about this with your physician to be sure there’s clear communication about expectations.
  • WHAT DID I LOOK LIKE IMMEDIATLEY FOLLOWING THE TREATMENT/BRUISING: Honesty, I looked rather awesome from the get-go immediately following the injections. Dr. Emer, in my opinion, is a superstar at these treatments. Everyone’s body is unique so of course initial results will vary, but speaking for myself… I did NOT bruise. My face looks lusher for lack of a better word. It does remind me of a slightly younger version of myself. It’s a nice feeling. Dr. Emer said to give it about 2 weeks turn around before you should make a careful evaluation of the results on you. But I walked out of there sensing it was successful experience.

  • HOW HAS IT IMPACTED ME OVER THESE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS POST MY VISIT? My confidence has felt elevated. I haven’t felt the need to wear as much makeup so getting ready to go every morning has suddenly been streamlined. This is something I wasn’t anticipating. However time is a valuable commodity, and I think it’s fantastic that Restylane Silk & Restylane Lyft had an impact to this end.
  • HOW LONG DOES IT LAST: Result vary patient to patient but anticipate 1 year to 18 months on average.
  • WOULD I DO THIS AGAIN IN THE FUTURE? One word here… Absolutely.
